Tarun Gogoi was my mentor, it was a personal loss for me: Rahul Gandhi

Guwahati: ‘He was my teacher, my teacher’ Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed this view on Wednesday while paying tribute to former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi died on Monday at the age of 86. Remembering Tarun Gogoi, Rahul Gandhi said, ‘He served Assam and the country. I have spent many hours with Gogoi ji. He was my teacher, my mentor. He explained to me what is the importance of Assam and its people. He introduced me to the beauty of Assam. On this occasion, Gaurav Gogoi, son of Tarun Gogoi, was also with Rahul.

Rahul said, “He always treated me like a son and behaved. Going to him is a personal loss for me.” After reaching Guwahati in a special flight from Goa, Rahul directly reached Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra where the body of Gogoi has been kept for the public’s last darshan. He also met the late Gogoi’s wife Dolly and son Gaurav. Gaurav is a Lok Sabha MP from Assam.

Speaking to reporters, Rahul Gandhi said, “Gogoi was not only the leader of Assam, he was a national leader. He was an excellent Chief Minister and a national level leader. He worked to unite the people of Assam and establish peace in the state. ” Significantly, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogai was admitted to the hospital due to problems after Kovid-19. He later died on 23 November. A three-day mourning has been announced in Assam on his death. (Also input from agency)
